Damai (Peace), as Peaceful as Your Heart

Summary: This story told about a girl who had Fracture Lumbal, a kind of disease that strike her spine and cause her two legs paralyzed. Niat Hati Damai is the second child of five. She was born in October 1982. Her father had passed away when she was five years old. At this time she lived with her mother, and brothers and sister. They live in Sogeadu village, about 20 kilometers south of Gunung Sitoli.

“Come on, you can do it Damai!” said Ika, one of YEU’s paramedic giving support to Damai who seated on the bed to sit at the wheelchair with her own effort. By trying the hardest she could, Damai slowly began to move her body at her bed. “Her condition is getting better all the time,” added Ika, while holding the wheelchair so it would not move. Because she was not that strong to hold her own body, finally her mother helped her to move into the wheelchair.
Niat Hati Damai, Damai’s full name, is one of the many earthquake victims who suffered from physical difficulties. After a few months getting intensive rehabilitation service from YEU/PRY, Damai started to be able to sit. Earlier her condition was so concerning, she could just lying weakly in her bed. She had illness on her spine that caused her both legs paralyzed, for almost three months she could not sit.
The happenings began from the Nias earthquake 6 months ago that devastated most of Nias region. When the earthquake happened, actually Damai had tried to rescue her self. But then she suddenly remembered that her little brother was still inside the house. She quickly ran back into her house to save her brother. After helping her brother to get out, suddenly the house’s roof collapsed and fell at Damai’s body. That incident caused the physical difficulties on Damai.
Damai was born 23 years ago; she is the second child of five. Her father died when she was five, from that moment, her mother supported the lives of the whole family. She once wanted to be a priest but because of the limited funds, she then stopped her dream, moreover after the physical limitation she has now. At the beginning she was so distressed with what happened to her, she did not expect this to happen to her. But in the long run she could manage with it all. Her spare time was filled with embroidery and playing guitar.
When we visited her house, the modest and even could be said concerning house, she was so happy. “I am so pleased because you all have come to visit our home. I also wished that you still want to visit here someday,” said Damai. Even though she lives in inadequacy she is still optimist. She still hoped that one day her dreams of being a priest could came true. She believed that God loves her. The living motivation that she had was so strong. She strongly believes that all things will be better at the future.
It is her optimism and strong motivation that we all could pick. In the middle of a condition where someone could be desperate, Damai in the contrary showed us all that in this life, we should keep on trying our best and believe in God.
