SITUATION REPORT - WEST SUMATRA, INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE
A powerful earthquake of 6.3 at Richter scale struck the coast
of West Sumatra on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 10:49 am (3:49 am
GMT), followed by a
series of aftershocks. The epicentre of the quake was 13
kilometres south-west of Batusangkar, West Sumatra at at depth of
33 kilometres. The tremor was felt as
far as Singapore and Malaysia. Thousands of people fled to
higher ground in fear of a possible tsunami. However, officials
from the Office of Meteorology and Geophysics said that the
quakes would not trigger a tsunami.
So far, the official death toll recorded is 71, with fears that
the numbers may rise as information is received from remote
areas, where many buildings are said to have collapsed. The
worst-hit areas appear to be in and around Solok, where at least
19 people were killed), Tanah Datar (where 16 people are recorded
as having been killed) and Padangpanjang. The road to
Padangpanjang was cut off by landslides.
Hundreds of people were injured, overwhelming local hospitals
and health facilities. Many of them are being treated in
temporary tents.
The three ACT members, CWS, YEU and YTBI, are in contact, with
YTBI coordinating with the CCI Region West Sumatra and YTBI
partners, and with local churches in Solok and Padangpanjang, to
gather more detailed information. YEU is preparing their medical
team to provide medical assistance along with YTBI if needed, and
CWS has indicated that it can support YTBI with relief items.
