Emergency Response

Earthquake on the Bridge

The fifth team of Emanuel hospital went from Klampok at 5 AM carrying a modest breakfast with them. We picked the south route between Petanahan Kebumen straight to Palbapang, Bantul because it’s closer and the traffic is quite calm. Along the road, we discussed a lot about earthquake and tsunami and the rescue efforts.
When the time for breakfast came, I pulled over the vehicle I drove right in the middle of a rather desolated bridge on top of a river between Kebumen and Kutoarjo. I want to take pleasure in the nature and the relaxed nuances before getting into the arena we supposed to go.
I teased my friends whose enjoying their breakfast in the middle of the bridge. When a truck passed the bridge, the earth (and the bridge) was pretty hard shaken. “Earthquake… earthquake… earthquake….” I screamed while running away from the crowd. A few friends followed what I did, running while looking frightened. Well, it seems that the first lesson of the disaster rescue efforts was not been practiced which is: DON’T PANIC.
