Clinic and Laboratory without Wall
Rabu, 24 September 2008, 11:54 WIB Viewed : 791 times
The farmers in this story heal their wound of disaster trauma by working. Their land is a efficacious clinic, and their farming activities are effective medicine. They grow as self-reliance and productive farmers, considering their land as their workshop and their school. They don’t need any room for working or studying. They also need neither teacher nor thick books to enrich their knowledge.
Tsunami has caused Zulkifli lost his one and only son and forced him and his wife to live in barrack. Realizing that he always felt depressed whenever remembering his son, he decided to work to the farm again. His first harvest made him aware that working is the easiest way to ease his pain of tsunami tragedy that has stolen his son and his belonging. Afterwards, he made a strong will to extend his farming.
However, he found some obstacles at that time. The first obstacle is about the trash mountain that was impossible to be cleaned by himself. Second, the land was hot and contaminated with salt resulted from Tsunami. To overcome this problem, he needed a lot of fertilizer. And the third, he don’t have any seed. Coincidentally, he met YEU staff. They are Kiswanto and Herman who are responsible for making water filtration system in Leung Mane. Then, Zulkifli shared the obstacles that he faced due to his farmland. Through Herman, Zulkifli asked support from YEU in the form of farming tools, seeds and fertilizer.
At that time, YEU was aware that what Zulkifli has done might be an effective remedy for disaster affected people to ease their pain and trauma caused by Tsunami. Therefore, few days later YEU gave the aids as proposed by Zulkifli. The given aids arouse Zulkifli’s spirit. Afterward, Zulkifli called his friends who were ready to farm again. Unfortunately, they did not have their own land; they cultivate Mr. Usman’s land. Finally, 4.5 hectares of Mr. Usman’s land was cleaned from brushwood and tsunami crust. Afterwards, the planted some vegetables such as: chili, eggplant, and watermelon. They gained success from their great effort in managing the farmland. Their farming unit grows rapidly. Some members of the farming group established new farming group under supervision and assistance of YEU.
After involved in the process for several months with the farmers, Kiswanto started to promote organic farming system. Kiswanto himself claimed that he knew nothing about organic farming system. However, he stated that he was willing to learn together with the farmers to improve the farming system. The farmers assisted by YEU agreed with Kiswanto’s idea. Afterward, they asked YEU to sent books about organic farming as their references. So, don’t be surprised if you find a lot of farming books in the farmland or in their house. In the midst of their activities, the farmers read some books, and then discuss and implement what they have attained from the book. They do it in their farmland. A school without wall established steadily in Leung Mane farmland. For them, farmland is not merely a place to work, but also be a place to learn and also a laboratory for the farmers and also the Community Organizer.
With hard work and perseverance, 4.5 hectare land is changed into fertile farmland which has given many things for Zulkifli and his friends. The farmland has granted them with overwhelmed crop and healed their trauma. The farmland also gives satisfactory crop. Zulkifli enthusiastically promotes organic farming. He is also well-known as a “chili-expert” among his friends. Henceforth, it’s not surprising if YEU sent him to some other YEU assisted area to share his expertise. Zulkifli truly has rigid spirit. He is enthusiastic whenever talking about plants. Now, he only has one determination: enhancing the farming groups in his area and improving the condition of cooperation unit in Leung Mane. “However, if YEU is no longer serving, people still can see the trace of YEU program” he said it with fiery eyes full of hope.
