Yafati Gea: My Story Told
Rabu, 11 Juli 2007, 13:32 WIB Viewed : 1344 times
We had a leave at our relatives when the earthquake hit Nias on March 28 2005. At that midnight, everybody tightly slept. A quake awoke everybody up. They went out home fearfully. Anxiety attacked.
I was outside the house after the quake. Yet, I could not find my wife. A moan realized me that the ruins had felt down on my wife’s leg.
In short, her right leg was amputated. She was referred to get further rehabilitation service at YAKKUM Emergency Unit. She was assisted with a prothese and got physiotherapy so that she could be able to walk better. It benefited her to do her daily activities as well.
May 2006, it was a rainy season. As my routine, I went to the field for coconuts. I had climbed some coconut trees yet there was a coconut tree, 30 meters height left. I climbed up to the top for some coconuts then. I felt dizzy when I got to the top. My feet and hands could not hold on the slippery tree longer. I fell down.
I was shocked when I could not move my feet and felt nothing. “What had happened?” I asked desperately. I was paralyzed. I could not continue further treatment at the hospital due to the high cost. I decided to continue the treatment at home. My wife had no medical ability to take care of me. I got pressure sore (decubitus). It was getting worse. I could not generate income for my family since I got paralyzed. We were depended on our relatives for our daily needs.
On February 2007, the medical team of YAKKUM Rehabilitation Centre came for medical assessment. They said that I have to be treated at the centre due to my 3rd grade pressure sore (decubitus). They took me to the centre on March 2007.
At the centre, I got comprehensive rehabilitation service such as wound care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychosocial assistance. The medical team gave supports to me during the treatment. I was motivated as well. I wished for normal life as others. I wanted to be independent both physically and economically.
In order to achieve my wishes, I followed their suggestions. Regularly, I had to move sideways both to the right and left so that the pressure sore would be quickly closed. Besides, I had not to sit often. After 3 months treatment, I had no pressure sore (decubitus) any longer. I became independent to take care of myself as well.
Currently, I joined electronic course at the centre. I wish to do good for my family and society when I got home.
At last, I thank God for His blessing and YAKKUM Rehabilitation Centre for its assistance for disabled. (rety)
