1. Introduction
Nias was struck by the tsunami on December 2004, but it was the earthquake, 8,7 in Richter scale on March 2005, that has badly devastated the island. Close to 1,000 lives were lost, more than 70,000 people became homeless, and almost all infrastructure that had not been lost after years of lack of maintenance was destroyed. At first, YEU-Nias, in emergency phase, conducted health services in several areas especially those which had not been intervened by other medical teams. In Gunungsitoli, the team served several IDP camps. One of the camps was in Soepomo street. Most of the IDPs came relocated from Kelapa street which was also devastated by the earthquake. Approximately 70 households stayed in the tents on Soepomo street with limited facility. Besides health service, YEU also assisted the IDP which was carried out by Mental Health sector. The activity aimed to reduce post-disaster traumatic syndrome. Activities varied in assisting groups and children in the camp. In the mid 2006, all the IDPs were relocated by the government to Kelapa street, their origin place. YEU still committed served them especially mental health team which is transformed to Education program. It is alternative education program for children in Lorong 8, Kelapa street. This program informally uses their spare time after they leave from school. The material also varies and connects its substantial into their daily life activity. As the program developed, YEU feels that it needs to conduct disaster management for kids and people in Lorong 8 because of its risky geographical factor. Moreover, Nias island is in earthquake line.
2. Children Participation
Since November 2006, YEU provide a learning center as a place for children to learn together. Before renting the place, the learning activity was taken place in one of villagers’ house. The learning center is located near the sea shore with dam on the other side. On a place of 54m², the learning center is used on Tuesdays and Fridays. YEU Educational team conducts learning activity together with cadres and regularly paid teacher There are around 50 elementary-school-aged children join in the alternative learning activity. The given materials are various and have clear purpose. The topics of plurality and democracy are brought up to children so they can learn to accept difference around them, such as different opinion, different background and also how to work in team.

3. Disaster management for children in Lorong 8
Lorong VIII community live in a place where threats of disaster risks are very likely to be happened. However, their relocation is located on coastal area, which gives them the same risk. The government didn’t give consideration of disaster risk management on this issue. This vulnerable condition is worsening with low community awareness about healthy environment. Unhealthy environmental condition is caused by the people themselves who have bad habits like throwing garbage not in proper place. It can harmful for the community itself, especially for children who are likely to play near the sea shore. Hence, it is very needed to raise children’s critical awareness by giving them understanding of disaster risk management. One specific session where children can learn and understand about disaster, disaster risk, and impact of disasters on their environment was conducted as part of learning activity for children in Lorong 8. This disaster management session is hoped to be stimulant for children to get acquainted with disaster risk which caused by nature or human factor surrounding. After they knowing the risk, they could describe what kind of anticipation they could carry out to reduce the risk they might face.
