MOUNT SEMERU ERUPTION

Eruption of Mount Semeru, East Java

Highlights

  • The head of Kabupaten/District Lumajang, or Bupati Lumajang has determined the emergency response status for the impact of the Semeru Eruption for 30 days, starting from December 4, 2021 to January 3, 2022.
  • Based on the data per December 13, 2021, there were 34 people died, 16 people were missing, 82 people were slightly injured, 26 people were seriously injured, 3,697 people were displaced and 5,205 people were affected by pyroclastic flow and billowing clouds of debris.
  • Affected Areas
  • Kabupaten Lumajang: in Kecamatan/Sub-District Pronojiwo i.e. Oro-Oro Ombo, Sumberurip and Supiturang Village, and in Kecamatan Candipuro i.e. Sumberwuluh and Sumbermujur Village.
  • Kabupaten Malang: Kecamatan Jabung  i.e. Slamparejo Village
  • Survivors were concentrated in communal and independent evacuation sites (camps) in Kabupaten Lumajang. Based on the record, there were 985 people in Pronojiwo and 1,733 people in Candipuro.
  • The affected communities were still on alert for the threat of post eruption disaster. High rainfall causes the risk of lava flooding in some areas, this is also due to the silting of the river which is the path of lava flood from the heavy rain.

Current Situation

During the day, the affected communities, who were evacuated, returned to their homes to clean the houses that could still be lived in and take care of the items that could still be used. One of the reasons the survivors returned to their homes was to take precautionary measures so that no other person would claim to own their house and receive assistance behind their back.

During the night, the affected affected communities returned to the evacuation sites and rested there. Economic activity in Pronojiwo District has started, shops, small stalls and food stalls have reopened as well as government office activities. The local government began to collect data on affected communities whose houses were slightly damaged, partially damaged, or completely damaged. The local government together with BPBD (local disaster management agency) in Lumajang, Jombang, and Malang were planning and starting to work on the construction of temporary housing in Pronojiwo District for affected communities whose houses were no longer habitable.
