An earthquake with a magnitudeof 5.6 hit Cianjur District in West Java with the strong tremors which were felt strong in several cities, including Jakarta. The earthquake occurred at 01.21 pm (local time) on Monday (21/11). The epicenter was 10 km southwest of Cianjur District of West Java with the depth of 10 km.
Based on the update from National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA)at 08.00 pm on the same day, the areas mostly affected by the earthquake are Rancagoong village in Cilaku sub-district, Limbangansari village in Cianjur sub-district, and in Cugenang sub-district. The NDMA reported 62 death casualties, whereas 25 people were recorded as still being buried under collapsed buildings in Cijedil Village in Cugenang sub-district. Another 79 people were injured. It was reported that as many as 5,389 displaced people were sheltered at several locations.
As for the infrastructure damage, in Cianjur District alone there were 2,272 damaged houses, 1 Islamic boarding school unit which was heavily damaged, 1 hospital was slightly damaged, 4 government buildings were damaged, and 3 schools were damaged. The earthquake also caused landslides which blocked roads in Cianjur District.
In addition to Cianjur Regency, infrastructure damage was also recorded in Bogor District with 46 damaged houses, 443 damaged houses in Sukabumi District, and 14 damaged houses in Sukabumi Municipality. The District Disaster Management Agency is still collecting data regarding the number of fatalities and damage to infrastructure.
Aftershocks are still being felt on the ground, although with less strength than the previous earthquake. People are warned to be cautious about it.
